How To Age Copper and Silver Without Chemicals

If you don’t like to use any chemicals due to the fumes to give jewelry an oxidized look, you can just try this simple method.

You need a hard boiled egg.
Ziploc bag
Unfinished copper or silver
Fine steel wool #0000

Place your jewelry in ziploc bag then place the hard boiled egg with shell in bag, close it tight and then press the egg until egg yolk is exposed. Wait a while until the metal turns black. Take it out, rinse it and then polish with steel wool.

How to Age Brass Without Chemicals

I love the look of antiqued brass jewelry so I wanted to age my raw pieces that I buy from a US manufacturer but I really dislike using chemicals. After spending a great deal of time researching the internet I have found a good way to do it.

1. In a plastic container pour some vinegar, apple cider works really well, add a tablespoon or two of salt (I use sea salt), mix well.

2. Put your pieces in mixture and let them soak for a few minutes or longer.

3. Take them out and dry with paper towel.

4. Place them in either a cookie sheet and put in oven to 350 or put a piece of tin foil over your stove burner (electric) and place pieces over them on med to high heat.

5. Watch them turn dark in a few minutes. Remove (with pliers) and let cool. If you like the verdigris patina just drop pieces in vinegar solution right when they are hot and take them out quickly and let air dry.

6. You can polish the pieces with #0000 steel wool (hardware store) and polish to give desired look.
